Concussion / Vestibular Rehabilitation (Physiotherapy)
Vestibular rehabilitation (VR), also known as vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), is a specialized form of physical therapy used to treat vestibular disorders or symptoms, characterized by dizziness, vertigo, and trouble with balance, posture, and vision. Vestibular / Concussion Rehabilitation is an exercise-based approach for treatment of dizziness and balance problems. After careful assessment and identification of the factors triggering the episodes of dizziness, appropriate techniques may be carried out to reduce current symptoms and/or an exercise program will be designed for each patient. This exercise regime is based on the rationale that repeated exposure will decrease the nervous system’s sensitivity to the stimuli. Balance and disequilibrium problems in the elderly have been shown to respond well to progressive balance retraining as well as specific stretching and strengthening techniques, based on assessment findings. A concussion is an injury to the brain that can happen with or without a blow to the head. Most concussions resolve within 1-4 weeks, although some people can experience persistent symptoms after this amount of time. Common symptoms are headache, neck pain, fatigue , dizziness, feeling “in a fog” and sleep disturbances.
